Kieran Dowell injury blow ‘serious’ as Rangers update emerges from Philippe Clement

Philippe Clement has provided injury updates on Rangers duo Kieran Dowell and Dujon Sterling, as per Chris Jack.

Jack wrote via his official X platform (16 January) that Dowell and Sterling have both picked up injuries, revealing that the former’s injury “sounds serious unfortunately.”

Clement explained in more detail (via Rangers Review, 16 January), “Kieran was really unlucky that he stuck in the grass on a bad pitch in Malaga. He will be out quite a long time normally.

“We need to make an assessment around that and how many weeks but he will not be back in the next couple of weeks that’s for sure.”

Setback

Dowell will be particularly frustrated that this injury has come at a time when he was beginning to feature more frequently under the Belgian.

Minutes have been hard to come by for the 26-year-old, who is yet to feature in the UEFA Europa League this year and until December had only started once in the Scottish Premiership, while making a further two appearances from the bench.

However, in recent weeks the midfielder has been utilised more regularly, starting three of the club’s last four league matches, scoring one goal in this time and coming off the bench in the 2-1 defeat against Celtic away from home on 30 December.

He would have been hoping to kick on and continue impressing his manager, but he will not get the opportunity to do this after this most recent setback.

For Clement, he will have to find a solution to play without a player who has been a regular in recent weeks.

In other Rangers news, one player has signed an agreement to leave the club.
