Rangers may get transfer reprieve as Josh Doig collapse threat emerges in Fabrizio Romano update

The potential failure of Josh Doig’s expected move to Marseille may open the door again to Rangers after Fabrizio Romano’s latest update.

The Scottish defender has agreed terms with the Ligue 1 side having apparently chosen them over any other option during the January transfer window, amid links to the Light Blues.

But the Italian journalist reported on 14 January that the French club have threatened to abandon the deal if the move isn’t sealed the same day, with Hellas Verona instead trying to sell him to Serie A’s Sassuolo.

Romano wrote: “Olympique Marseille are very clear on Josh Doig deal: agreement with Verona today or they will move on another target.

“Deal done on player side but Verona were still pushing to sell him to Sassuolo on Saturday night.”

An answer on whether the 21-year-old gets his move to the Stade Velodrome should arrive within hours given the ultimatum that has apparently been laid down.

Should the transfer collapse it may hand an unexpected opportunity back to Rangers, especially with Ridvan Yilmaz heavily linked to a move to Verona.

When interest from the Light Blues and their Italian counterparts in each others’ full-backs emerged in the window it appeared to be something that might suit all parties for the two young defenders to swap places.

Whether Doig would be willing to head back to the SPFL or if his club would abandon their apparent desire to do business with Sassuolo remains to be seen but if the player’s preferred move to France is taken off the table he would need to reassess his situation, and should Rangers make an offer that is tied to a Yilmaz deal it could be convincing to Verona.

Rangers activity at left-back during the January window has emerged as a key focus, and while the threat of Doig going elsewhere while Yilmaz moved to replace him developed on Friday (12 January) the delay into the weekend may now have brought a more preferable outcome back into the picture, so the coming hours should be key.

In other Rangers news, a star Light Blues man’s exit can’t be dismissed according to Chris Jack, after new transfer interest emerged.
