Rangers: Hugh Keevins makes ‘odd’ Jack Butland claim live on air
Hugh Keevins insists it would be “odd” if Jack Butland is named Player of the Season for Rangers due to the fact he is a goalkeeper.
The summer signing, who joined on a free transfer after his release by Crystal Palace, has been superb in his first-half season with the Gers.
However, Keevins believes a more attack-minded player, such as goalscoring defender James Tavernier, should land the award.
Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard [12 January], the Daily Record reporter said: “Butland makes timely saves and looks good in the process.
“However, for a Rangers goalkeeper to be player of the year eventually would be an odd choice.
“You’re looking for forward-going players and for Tavernier, the numbers stack up for him.”
World-class saves
If there was an award for the best player in the first half of the campaign, it would likely be between Butland and Tavernier.
Gers skipper Tavernier, despite his numerous critics, has popped up with many an important goal – not least the winner in the Viaplay Cup final.
Butland will never get the same plaudits as someone who scores regularly, but his performances have at least been acknowledged by fans.

The ex-England international produces some world-class saves, the most recent example being in the 3-1 win against Kilmarnock last time out.
If Butland’s form continues in the second half of the season, he has every right to be in contention for the top individual award at Ibrox.
In the same way that centre-backs can sometimes be a level above, goalkeepers are also deserving of praise when looking at the wider picture.
After a summer of questionable transfer activity, at least Butland has proved to be a superb acquisition for the long term.
In other Rangers news, the Gers are reportedly open to another player exit as multiple clubs line up to complete a deal.
