Derek Ferguson thrilled with ‘brilliant’ Rangers decision after Ibrox development for ‘absolutely phenomenal’ Union Bears
We’re delighted to welcome former Ibrox star Derek Ferguson as our exclusive Rangers columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points in Govan…
Rangers great Derek Ferguson welcomed the “brilliant decision” to move the “absolutely phenomenal” Union Bears to a new singing section of Ibrox from next season.
The proposals will see the Rangers ultras fan group moved from their currect position at the bottom-left corner of the Broomloan Road to a more prominent position housed at the Copland Front (The Scotsman, 4 January).
It is reported that around 600 supporters will have to be moved from their current season ticket position, but Four Lads Had A Dream shared (4 January) that 91 per cent of participants in a recent fan survey backed the decision and had “overwhelming backing” from Gers boss Philippe Clement and the players, who believe the atmosphere generated “helps them greatly”.
Ferguson, speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, thinks it is a terrific decision that can only help the team on the pitch.
“It’s a brilliant decision because going to games at Ibrox sometimes you rely on the players to get a reaction from the fans but what the Union Bears do is they create that atmosphere right from the off,” he said.
“I think in the Broomloan, in the corner, it takes away from that, I think they’re absolutely phenomenal at what they do so to house them in the Copland behind the goal is absolutely bang on the money.

“It’s not just with Rangers you look at other clubs throughout the country, they’ve got their ultras or whatever you want to call them but I think they’re so important at a game because why do you go to football? You go for the atmosphere, these guys create it and everything that goes with it it’s just brilliant, I think they should actually be given a larger section.
“You can’t please everybody I know guys have had their season tickets for years but hopefully Rangers can accommodate them sensibly and I think they’re going to add another wee bit.
“I think it’s good for football because I thought it was getting to a stage where you were going and it was like the cinema, you were going there and they were sat there eating their burgers or popcorn or drinks and there’s no singing and you need these guys to create that atmosphere.”
In other Rangers news, a source has shared the Ibrox board’s stance on a move for Tashreeq Matthews in January.
