David Edgar makes Willie Collum jibe after what happened in Rangers loss v Hertha Berlin
David Edgar compared the referee in Rangers’ 1-0 defeat to Hertha Berlin to Willie Collum in a jibe on Twitter after the official sent off Philippe Clement in the friendly clash.
The host of the Heart & Hand Podcast made the joke following weeks of intense scrutiny on Collum surrounding a decision not to award a penalty in the 2-1 defeat at Parkhead.
The referee who officiated the friendly game on 13 January, made some controversial calls with yellow cards flying as he looked to stamp his authority on the game, including sending Clement off for apparent dissent.
The ref had a power trip
It seemed as though, in his attempt to control the game, the referee let the power get to his head. Yellow cards all over the place, with Connor Goldson also booked for dissent towards the officials, and a red to the boss, is a very strange path for the ref to take in a friendly game.
If his willingness to hand out cautions was an attempt to make an otherwise tedious affair more note-worthy then he succeeded, with the post-game conversations now focused on the bizarre refereeing display from the Spaniard.
Aside from the questionable officiating, it was a disappointing and boring display from Rangers as they continued their mid-season warm-weather training camp in La Manga in preparation for the second half of the season.
The result on these occasions, and neither do bookings or red cards (somebody should tell the ref), but a drab display from the Ibrox club is never what you want to see. They will return to Ibrox in a friendly with Copenhagen on 16 January in hopes of a more inspiring display.
