Borna Barisic unlikely to leave Rangers in January as Leeds United eye transfer

Borna Barisic is unlikely to leave Rangers in January despite Leeds United showing an interest in a January transfer, report Football Scotland.

Writing on their website (13 January), the news outlet report that the Championship club are interested in the Croatia international who is out of contract at the end of the season.

But a deal is seen as “unlikely” currently with Ridvan Yilmaz set to leave for Serie A club Verona, while the Ibrox club want to hand Barisic a new contract.

“But Borna Barisic is unlikely to be leaving this month,” they wrote.

“Instead, the veteran Croatian international could extend his six-year stay in Glasgow. Football Scotland understands Ibrox chiefs have opened talks with the 31-year-old’s representatives over the possibility of a fresh extension, with Leeds United keen on the player who has just six months left on his deal.”

Sensible

If Ridvan Yilmaz is being allowed to leave the club in this window, then Rangers cannot afford to allow Barisic to leave too.

Despite the fact he only has six months remaining on his contract and this could potentially be the last chance to earn some cash for him, Clement has clearly taken a liking to him and he is a senior member of the dressing room.

He has got quality too and his crossing ability from set-pieces and open play make him a regular threat for opposition teams to deal with.

The team is already light on options for that position so letting him leave would be suicidal if we’re already letting Yilmaz leave the club, so Leeds will simply have to look elsewhere.

As for the new contract, most fans would say it’s a mistake because his quality level has dropped greatly in recent seasons but Clement deserves to be backed for now and so long as it isn’t a long-term deal then it will have benefits.
