Rangers use Ridvan Yilmaz in leverage attempt as six-team bidding war breaks out for Josh Doig

Rangers have tried to get “leverage” in the race for Hellas Verona defender Josh Doig by attempting to send Ridvan Yilmaz in the other direction.

That is according to TEAMtalk, with the publication reporting on its website on Friday (12 January) that several other clubs are also interested in Doig.

TEAMtalk reported that Leeds United, Marseille, Sassuolo, Atalanta and Torino are among the clubs chasing the 21-year-old left-back, who has made 13 appearances for Hellas Verona this season.

“Rangers, Leeds United and Marseille are all in a battle to try and sign Hellas Verona full-back Josh Doig in the January transfer window, sources have told TEAMtalk. Sources state that the Scottish club are in the running but face a battle from competitors.

“The Verona defender is likely to move in this window according to those close to the player and will be replaced by Rangers defender Ridvan Yilmaz who is close to joining up in Italy with his new side. Rangers have tried to get leverage in the race for Doig by sending Yilmaz to Verona.”

Top talent

Doig is certainly a top talent, and Rangers would be foolish not to at least try and bring him to Ibrox as soon as possible.

The uncertain futures of fellow full-backs Borna Barisic and Ridvan Yilmaz should provide Philippe Clement with further incentive to snap up the youngster from Hellas Verona.

But there is seemingly a long list of clubs interested in the services of Doig, who has really been enjoying his time in Italy ever since his switch from Hibernian.

Doig has a bright future in the game at club and national team level, but where he ends up next remains a mystery. The full-back is certain to dominate the headlines this month given his apparent availability, but the Gers have a real battle on their hands.

The club are, of course, currently on their winter break, but that should not stop the powers that be at Ibrox from working hard to get important deals over the line.

In other Rangers news, Nils Koppen has set his sights on South American transfers at Ibrox, according to Chris Jack.
