Rangers: Johnny McFarlane tips Dujon Sterling to become ‘superstar’ as future Premier League move on the cards

Johnny McFarlane believes Rangers ace Dujon Sterling has all the qualities to become a “superstar” at Ibrox.

Speaking on the Rangers Review YouTube channel on Thursday (11 January), the Herland journalist said the 24-year-old is a “physical tank” and that he likes his potential as a “hybrid player” at fullback and in midfield, where he’s been playing lately under Philippe Clement.

He added that the Englishman could be a “very attractive” signing for Premier League clubs in the future if he can continue his development with the Gers.

“I think it’s all there for him,” said McFarlane. “It’s going to be up to him to stretch out and grab the opportunity he’s been given. I see him quite comfortably making a long-term adjustment to central midfield.

“I think he’s got all the qualities to become a superstar in there if he can work on his game because, let’s face it, there are not many midfielders that have that defensive nouse, that have the speed, the ability to snuff out danger because they have that natural defensive awareness, it’s difficult to come across.

“Not only that, he’s a physically imposing character, he’s not a wee, diminutive guy. Dujon Sterling is a bit of a physical tank, so I really like his potential as being a hybrid player who can do both things and I think that can make him a very attractive potential signing for Premier League clubs in two or three years time if he can continue to be developed.”

Seemless

There is absolutely no way that Rangers fans would have thought anyone would now be speaking so highly about Sterling just a couple of months ago following his first few performances for the club.

But following the injury crisis in midfield, he was drafted in to play in a deep-lying role and has slotted in almost seamlessly in that position.

While statements about him potentially making a big Premier League move down the line could be a bit premature, there is reason to be excited about what he could offer the Gers moving forward.

It was clear that he was a promising player when he made the move to Glasgow after Chelsea decided to keep him on their books for a number of years before his contract ran out at Stamford Bridge in the summer.

Clement will now be keen to help him continue his progress over the next few months as he could prove to be an extremely valuable player at Ibrox.
