Rangers transfer update: Official Sam Lammers announcement update after January exit agreed

Sam Lammers’ departure from Rangers to FC Utrecht should be made official on Wednesday (10 January), according to Tutto Mercato Web.

The Italian outlet reported on 9 January that the Dutchman’s loan exit to the Eredivisie had been agreed and contracts were set to be signed, with the announcement expected the following day.

His move to Ibrox has proven to be anything but a success for the 26-year-old or for the Light Blues, as the Dutchman has scored just twice since his summer arrival.

Rangers

The arrival of Fabio Silva on loan from Wolves has reduced the opportunities available for Lammers so he is now set to depart.

Relief

Nobody at Rangers seems to have benefited from Michael Beale’s move to sign Lammers for £3.5million in the summer [Daily Record, 15 June], least of all the man himself.

Some nice touches on the ball and a scorcher in off the bar at Dundee on 1 November have proven to be about as good as it got for him in Scotland.

He drew heavy criticism as action looked to be bypassing him with too much regularity, with Michael Stewart even claiming his teammates were deliberately ignoring him on the pitch.

Rangers

Philippe Clement, somewhat surprisingly, continued to give Lammers a run of starts after he came in at Ibrox, but the former Atalanta man’s fortunes didn’t improve much and he has been consigned largely to the bench in recent weeks.

His last strong goalscoring season was in the Dutch top flight with Herenveen during the 2018/19 campaign so the intention all round will be for him to regain some of that form.

But from a Rangers point of view it would almost certainly be with an eye on drumming up interest for a permanent exit in the summer, with the Ibrox move simply not working out.

In other Rangers news, the Light Blues are now leading the race to pull of a “major transfer coup” this month.
