Rangers transfer news: ‘Genuine chance’ update emerges on Michy Batshuayi deal after striker offered at Ibrox

Rangers signing Michy Batshuayi in the January transfer window is not considered likely, sources have told The 4th Official.

The outlet reported via Patreon on 10 January that there will only be a “genuine chance” of the Belgian striker arriving at Ibrox if he or current club Fenerbache take a “massive hit” on his wages.

The former Chelsea man, 30, has reportedly been offered to the Light Blues, although some time ago, but “as of right now” the financial sacrifices necessary to get it done are “not happening”.

Rangers are said to be looking at multiple forwards however and are keeping information under wraps, but are “definitely” hoping to sign a striker.

But after the financial outlay in the summer, even in light of departures for Sam Lammers and Ridvan Yilmaz, a Batshuayi move is said to be “difficult”.

Impossible?

As with everything at Ibrox this month finances play a huge part in proceedings, so perhaps that is set to throw a giant spanner into the works.

If Philippe Clement is having talks with his compatriot today then the Ibrox boss would surely have been aware that the wages were substantial for Batshuayi in Istanbul.

It may be that he thinks he can convince the striker to forego some money in order to be the de facto main man up front for five months in the SPFL, to give him a clear platform to get into the Euro 2024 squad.

That might be a pitch that could be successful, but if it comes down to getting Fenerbahce to pay out on a hefty proportion of the salary they would have comparatively little incentive to do so.

On paper the Belgian international could be exactly what Clement is looking for as he eyes a title push and more potential trophies over the second half of the season, since Batshuayi’s scoring record in the Turkish Super Lig over the past season and a half has been solid.

But if the numbers don’t work then it will be impossible, which would be an obvious frustration if the player was potentially willing to make the move otherwise.

In other Rangers news, a £1.29m fee update has emerged with a medical imminent for another January Gers move.
