Rangers: Pundit compares Sam Lammers situation to Ally McCoist at Ibrox, ‘Booed left, right and centre’

Gordon Dalziel has compared the current situation Sam Lammers is going through to when Ally McCoist signed for Rangers.

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard on Tuesday (9 January), the pundit said the former Gers favourite was “booed left, right and centre” in his first few months at Ibrox after arriving from Sunderland in 1983 before going on to be the “biggest hero ever”.

He added that players don’t get that much time anymore as Dutch forward Lammers has joined Utrecht on loan, but he believes the 26-year-old could still have an impact in the future for the Light Blues as he is a “decent player”.

“I come back to the time when I was at Rangers and Ally McCoist come into the building,” said Dalziel. “Six months, eight months, he was getting booed left, right and centre, but he went on to become the biggest hero ever at Rangers.

“But you don’t get that time now, the modern day you do not get that. You come in for big fees, the competition is so high now. They’ll probably give you that three-month grace I think.

“But if you look at Lammers, 30-odd games, I think it’s enough. I think Rangers fans have made up their mind. But look, for the sake of the lad, he might go away, he might get himself full of confidence because technically there is a decent player there.”

Unlikely

It doesn’t look like Lammers will have a future at Rangers down the line even though the loan deal with Utrecht isn’t believed to contain a buy option.

The time Dalziel discussed about McCoist turning things around was a completely different era as signings cost far less money back then and their wages were a tiny fraction of what players earn now.

New additions are expected to make an almost instant impact, particularly at a club like the Gers, where the stakes are so high and every single game matters.

That brings an awful lot of pressure and some players simply can’t handle it, with the Dutchman registering just two goals and two assists in his 31 appearances at Ibrox since singing from Atalanta over the summer.

Although a strong showing back in his homeland with the Dutch club could persuade Philippe Clement to hand the forward another chance in Glasgow next season, the Light Blues boss will probably have hoped to have got a better replacement in for him by the time that comes around.

In other Rangers news, a Sky Sports pundit has shared who would be a “terrific” signing for the Gers.
