Rangers transfer news: Dinamo Zagreb set to offer contract to Borna Barisic for summer move

Dinamo Zagreb are planning to offer Borna Barisic a contract this summer when his Rangers deal expires if he doesn’t renew, according to Index.

Writing on their website (8 January), the Croatian outlet report that the left-back was a target for Dinamo in the most recent summer window but a deal never materialised.

But with Barisic yet to renew his contract at Ibrox he is set to become a free agent at the end of the season, meaning he can talk to foreign clubs about a move and Zagreb are planning to reignite their interest.

“One of the unsuccessful signings was Borna Barisic, who entered the last half year of his contract with Rangers,” they wrote.

“There was talk about him in Maksimir last summer, but he could not be brought in, and it seemed that Dinamo would consider their options for the winter.

“Now it seems that the consideration will be extended until next summer, that is, when Barisic is out of contract, of course, if he does not extend his contract in the meantime. However, it is already clear that this job will not be easy for Dinamo even then.”

Bitter sweet

Barisic has been the first-choice left-back at the club for a while now, but it’s also been clear that he isn’t good enough for that role for a while too.

Ridvan Yilmaz was signed seemingly to replace him but it hasn’t really worked out for the Turkish international and he now looks set to leave the club this month, meaning Barisic becomes even more important as the only natural option at the club for that position.

But he is now in his 30’s and Philippe Clement is said to be keen to sign a new left-back too, which could well spell the end of Barisic’s time at Ibrox.

While it would be a smart move to let him go and reinvest in the position, the likelihood of now losing him for nothing is a blow because he could easily have earned the club a decent transfer fee just like Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos before him.

It’s certainly one to keep an eye on while a new deal hasn’t been signed, but clubs are getting their ducks in a row to take Barisic away from Glasgow this summer.

In other Rangers news, Ibrox decision made as early loan termination mooted.
