Rangers transfer news as Steven Alzate injury development emerges

Steven Alzate is focused on speeding up his recovery from an ankle injury amid January interest from Rangers, according to Canal RCN.

The Colombian website reported [9 January] that the Brighton loanee is concentrating on recovering from his latest injury sustained during a loan spell at Standard Liege, with his future at his parent club uncertain.

It is understood that the Colombian midfielder hopes to be fit and ready to start playing football again by the end of January, having travelled back to England from Belgium for medical attention.

Another option

The central midfielder offers Philippe Clement yet another option for a rather vacant midfield this season. With long-term injuries to Nico Raskin and Ryan Jack, plus a short-term spell on the sidelines for Jose Cifuentes, Rangers have been light in the middle of the park.

Despite suffering from an ankle injury currently, there is little worry about Alzate moving forward once he recovers. He joined Standard Liege in September 2023, making 13 appearances since and scoring one goal.

The 25-year-old had impressed in his time at American Express Stadium, performing in the Premier League for the Seagulls. Alzate has played 43 matches in the top tier of English football, making up most of his 51 Brighton appearances.

Alzate could be an excellent choice for Clement and Rangers, who are desperate for enforcement and depth under new leadership. Michael Beale went on a shopping spree during the summer, leaving the current manager with limited funds and a bunch of disjointed players.

With interest from Rangers and Club Brugge, Alzate will take time to consider his best option, hoping for the most amount of game time, providing him with the best chance at development.

However, it remains to be seen whether Alzate will remain with the Premier League side or if he will seek more minutes on the pitch, with his current deal coming to a close at the end of the season.
