Rangers consider January loan options for Hogarth in Ibrox transfer news

Rangers are considering loan options for defender Jay Hogarth, with Scottish Championship and League One outfits interested, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper reported via their transfer blog [9 January, 11:19] that Rangers believe the defender can kick on in his progression with more regular first-team football.

Following a successful spell at Alloa Athletic in the Scottish Championship, the Ibrox club are now looking for ways to get the defender back out and playing regularly.

An uncertain future

While it is claimed that Rangers believe he can take a step up in his career and his ability if he is handed more game time away from the club on loan, questions will arise as to whether his long-term future will remain at Ibrox.

At 20 years old, he has passed the typical age when you’d expect a young talent to make his breakthrough into the first team, as seen with Ross McCausland this season, and a loan to the Scottish Championship, or even League One would not represent the level you’d like him to be at.

If his future was in the first team at Rangers, the signs would already be there that he has the ability to step up and make that role his own, but another Championship loan would fall below that level.

However, if the idea is for him to continue to progress away from Rangers before ultimately being sold, the question will remain as to why they don’t just allow him to leave on a permanent deal already rather than continue loan spells elsewhere.

In other Rangers news, Mark Wilson has tipped a January deal for Lawrence Shankland.
