Rangers: Deal agreed for Sam Lammers to exit Ibrox on loan, transfer will be complete within 48 hours

Rangers have agreed a deal that will see Sam Lammers leave Ibrox to join FC Utrecht on loan for the remainder of the season, according to STV.

The broadcaster reported via their website on Tuesday evening (9 January) that Lammers, 26, will complete his loan exit from Ibrox in the next 48 hours.

Michael Beale signed the Dutch forward from Sampdoria in a summer deal worth £3.5million but he’s struggled to perform in Scotland for both the ex-Gers boss and his successor Philippe Clement.

Good riddance

Rangers should be looking to get rid of Lammers completely but you can understand why clubs won’t be queuing up to pay for the forward on a full-time basis.

Lammers is tied down at Ibrox until 2027, meaning that it will be very hard to get rid of him.

It’ll prove impossible to recoup the money spent on him.

Lammers has scored just two goals in 31 appearances across all competitions for the Light Blues since arriving in the summer from Sampdoria, who were no doubt laughing their way to the bank when that multi-million deal went through.

He’s mainly played as a number 10 behind the equally-woeful Cyriel Dessers but Clement has thankfully seen some sense and hasn’t hesitated in righting one of Beale’s many wrongs.

Rangers

Lammers has done well in the Eredivisie previously, scoring 20 goals in 51 appearances in the Dutch top-flight across spells at PSV and Heerenveen.

That league, in terms of quality, is probably on a par with the Scottish Premiership if you ignore the two Old Firm teams and the big guys like PSV, Ajax and Feyenoord.

Sometimes, players just don’t suit some leagues but do brilliantly in others.

If Lammers does do well at Utrecht, however, we don’t want to hear fans saying he should get a second chance.

In other Rangers news, a European club is readying a contract offer to sign this long-serving Ibrox star.
