Robby McCrorie told to quit Rangers in January transfer window by family member

Rangers goalkeeper Robby McCrorie has been told to quit the Light Blues during the January transfer window by his brother and former Ibrox man, Ross McCrorie.

Ross McCrorie was a product of the Ibrox youth system but departed Glasgow for Aberdeen in 2020 in search of regular first-team football, before switching to the English Championship side Bristol City during the summer transfer window.

The signing of Jack Butland last summer has ensured that Robby McCrorie is yet to feature for the Gers so far this season and his brother Ross has urged the Rangers keeper to move away from Ibrox so he can play every week.

As quoted in the print edition of the Sunday Mail (7 January, page 47) he said: “He’s at a stage where he’s got to be playing – he knows that. It reminds me of when I left Rangers. I needed to get games under my belt.

“Robby is a good keeper so he’ll have to get Rangers’ thoughts on it and see what happens in January. It’s a dilemma having to leave a club like that – but the best thing for any player is to play every week.

“That’s what makes you better.”

Best for all parties

It is clear that Butland is Philippe Clement’s number one at Ibrox and should the Englishman continue to perform at the level he has done so far this season, he will remain between the posts for Rangers for years to come yet.

That leaves no clear pathway for Robbie McCrorie to break into the first team and more importantly, hold down a regular starting place. It seems unlikely that he will ever play 30 games or more a season while Butland remains in Glasgow.

While 25 years old remains young for a goalkeeper, it is also the age when most stoppers begin playing regular first-team football. A move away from Rangers this January would be the best move for Robbie McCrorie’s career.

He should take his brother Ross’ advice and make the switch before the end of the month. It worked out well for him during his career and it should be similarly successful for the young goalkeeper.
