Rangers to sign ‘creative’ playmaker amid Todd Cantwell rumours at Ibrox

Kenny Miller believes Rangers need to sign a creative midfielder during the January transfer window amid uncertainty over Todd Cantwell at Ibrox.

It has been a rollercoaster of a career with Rangers since joining in January 2023 from Norwich City, with many expecting more of the 25-year-old, especially when it comes to goal contributions.

Despite Dujon Sterling impressing in midfield, it has become obvious that he is not the “creative” type that the Gers are desperately in need of and Miller has tipped Philippe Clement to target a playmaker this month.

“There are a lot of rumours about Todd Cantwell in that position [creative midfielder] right now. Is he happy in Glasgow? We don’t know for sure,” the Sky Sports pundit wrote for Daily Record on Sunday (7 January).

“What we do know is that he has not produced the same kind of form he showed at the end of last term. Clement needs more from him.

“I take my hat off to Dujon Sterling who has performed admirably there. But he’s not the creative type or someone who might make the difference in a title race. That’s why I think the manager will look to strengthen that area of the pitch.”

Spot on

Miller is right. Cantwell has been disappointing with his performances this season, to say the least. He has registered three goals and four assists in 25 appearances, in addition to his six goals and five assists last season.

Rangers have already won the Viaplay Scottish League Cup, also completing a dramatic victory over Real Betis to claim the top spot in Europa League Group C and reach the knockout stages.

Clement Rangers

However, the Gers’ loss to Celtic at the end of December showcased the flaws still in Clement’s squad. Cantwell’s inability to step up in such a huge moment needs to be addressed, with Rangers now eight points behind the Scottish Premiership leaders.

A new creative midfielder signing in January will be vital to Rangers’ success during the current campaign. With injuries to Kemar Roofe and Danilo, Cyriel Dessers being hit-and-miss, and Abdallah Sima away on international duty at the 2023 African Cup of Nations, Clement is in desperate need of another attacking player.

It would not be a huge shock if Cantwell was to leave during January, nor would it be a massive miss, with the 25-year-old midfielder failing to stamp his mark at Ibrox since joining.
