Done deal as Ben Williamson seals Rangers exit in January transfer announcement

Rangers have confirmed the permanent departure of Ben Williamson from the club on January 4, with the midfielder signing for Hamilton Academical.

The defensive midfielder is a product of the Ibrox youth academy, boasting heaps of experience via loan spells with Arbroath, Livingston, Raith Rovers, Dundee FC and Partick Thistle.

Williamson spent the first half of the season on loan at the latter, making 12 appearances in the Scottish Championship as Thistle pushed for a chance at Scottish Premiership football.

Rangers have wished the player well on his next adventure, having come through the club’s academy.

It is understood that the deal was a little more complicated than usual, with three clubs interested in the youngster’s signature. There were original agreements in place with Partick Thistle following his six-month loan at the club, as per the Daily Record.

Talented prospect

It looks as though the 22-year-old will go straight into Hamilton’s squad for their trip to Stirling Albion on Saturday 6 January. And why shouldn’t he?

The midfielder has clearly shown enough talent over his several loan spells out from Rangers’ academy, amassing 74 appearances in total outside of Ibrox.

In addition to this, Williamson has made a handful of appearances in the UEFA Youth League for Rangers U19 during the 2019/20 season, helping the Gers to draws against Young Boys and two victories over Slovan Bratislava.

He even has experience on the international stage, claiming five caps for Scotland U21s between August 2021 and March 2022. Hamilton have picked up a shining talent, despite being such a young age.

One to watch.
