Derek Clark says ‘absolute flop’ Sam Lammers must depart Rangers ASAP amid Ibrox exit rumours

Derek Clark labelled Sam Lammers an “absolute flop” and wants the out-of-favour forward to depart Rangers as soon as possible amid Ibrox exit rumours.

The Dutch forward has only two goals in 17 Scottish Premiership appearances since signing from Atalanta in the summer as part of a recruitment drive by former boss Michael Beale that has faced severe criticism.

There had been rumblings that Beale might look to take him on loan to his new club Sunderland, though The Sun (5 January) reported that while Rangers do indeed want to offload Lammers it will not be for a reunion with the man who brought him to Ibrox.

Still, journalist Clark – speaking on the Rangers Review podcast (5 January, 17:45) – says Lammers has to be shipped out at the Glasgow giants.

“One player who has been linked with a move away from the club is Sam Lammers according to the Newcastle Chronicle,” he said.

“Sunderland of all teams have been mooted as a potential destination for the Rangers player. He’s been an absolute flop since signing from Atalanta in the summer. I think it would be a loan deal initially.

“I think Michael Beale – he’s not in many fans’ good books, but if he takes Sam Lammers to Sunderland then that might go some way to changing the mood somewhat. He has to depart Rangers there’s no doubt about that, it’s not really worked for him at Ibrox.”

Exit needed for all parties

Of all the nine players Beale signed during that truly disastrous summer transfer window, you would be hard-pushed to make an argument that any have been worse than Lammers who has just been a total failure at Ibrox.

Cyriel Dessers has come in for a lot of criticism but he has chipped in with goals at crucial times and others such as Dujon Sterling have picked up some form after initially struggling for game time.

But there really has been nothing redeeming about Lammers, who appears not much of an out-and-out striker but also devoid of the creativity needed to be a successful number 10 for Rangers.

Philippe Clement is clearly not impressed and the Belgian obviously does not see him as part of his long-term thinking. It seems hugely unlikely that Sunderland will be his next destination but for the club and the player he really does need to move on.

In other Rangers news, the club are in for a loan-to-buy deal involving a Premier League defender.
