Rangers transfer news: Everton defender Mason Holgate update emerges amid quiet spell at Southampton

Sean Dyche has confirmed that Everton will not be calling Rangers target Mason Holgate back from his loan spell at Southampton.

The 27-year-old has been a peripheral figure for the Saints under manager Russell Martin this season.

However, despite the Toffees having the option to recall him and loan him out to another side, they do not seem keen on doing it, as things stand.

Dyche said on 3 January, as quoted by Football Scotland, “The player made it very clear he wanted the fresh feel of a new challenge, and wanted to get his teeth into it. I’m sure that’s what he will be doing. He hasn’t played much, but that’s part of a professional’s life. He’s a Southampton player at the current time.”

Move on

Rangers should consider moving on from pursuing Holgate, as the defender’s uncertain situation and lack of regular game time could potentially hinder their pursuit of the league title.

While the 27-year-old has expressed a desire for a fresh challenge and more playing minutes, his current situation at Southampton does not guarantee the consistent game time he seeks.

Gers, in their quest for immediate success, need players who are not only talented but also readily available and in prime form.

Holgate’s limited appearances at Southampton, coupled with their successful unbeaten run in the Championship, suggests that he might struggle to secure a regular spot in the starting XI.

It’s strange that he moved from Everton to St Mary’s to get game time and even when he’s not getting it, does not want to move away.

There are plenty of other defenders Philippe Clement can target if that indeed is a priority position for the club in the summer.

In other Rangers news, a sensation at a big-name Premier League club is the perfect long-term defensive option for Gers and a January transfer must be on the cards.
