Rangers could be forced to give up chunk of January transfer fee amid fresh Ridvan Yilmaz development

Rangers will lose 20% of any fee they receive for Ridvan Yilmaz if they decide to let him leave the club in January, according to Fanatik.

Writing on their website (4 January), the Turkish news outlet report that the Istanbul club have a 20% sell-on clause inserted into the defender’s contract with Rangers that states they will get a percentage of the fee if he leaves the Ibrox club during the duration of his deal.

Italian club Verona are said to be in “very active” negotiations this month with the left-back a target, while reports suggest that Philippe Clement is happy to let him leave should an acceptable offer come in.

Rangers defender Ridvan Yilmaz

“According to the contract signed between Beşiktaş and Rangers in 2022, in case Ridvan Yilmaz is loaned to another club or transferred to another club while his contract with Rangers FC is still ongoing, 20 percent of the net transfer income will be paid to the Black-Whites,” they wrote.

Shame

Rangers spent around £4m on bringing Ridvan Yilmaz to the club in the summer of 2022 and they are still waiting to see a return on their investment as we enter 2024.

The Turk has started the last four games in a row which is one of his longest runs in the team, and his performances have been impressive, but Clement seems unsure on him.

Borna Barisic has been the first-choice option throughout but his contract situation means a new left-back is surely needed at this point.

But if Yilmaz is set to leave then the club need to be aware that they’re likely to make a loss rather than a profit, with Verona unlikely to pay the £5m that would be required to see the team break even due to this 20% clause.

The club clearly felt that there would be great re-sale value in Ridvan at the time of the deal, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to play out that way and the Gers could now find themselves short of cash.
