Hellas Verona want to sign Rangers defender Ridvan Yilmaz in January transfer window – Gianluca Di Marzio

Serie A side Verona are in ‘very active’ negotiations to sign Rangers defender Ridvan Yilmaz this month, according to Gianluca Di Marzio.

Writing on his live transfer blog (2 January, 17:28), the reliable Italian journalist reports that the club have targeted the Turkish international for a move this month.

Yilmaz has started each of the last four games under Philippe Clement but had reportedly been told he is free to leave the club during the transfer window.

“Verona very active, with incoming and outgoing negotiations, in these first hours of the January transfer market,” he wrote.

“The yellow and blues have targeted Ridvan Yilmaz, a Turkish left back born in 2001 owned by Glasgow Rangers.”

Mistake

This could be a really big mistake from Rangers, because we’re finally starting to see why the club spent £4m on bringing him to Ibrox in the first place.

It was strange when he signed that he couldn’t get a sniff under Giovanni van Bronckhorst, and when Michael Beale came into the club his fortunes didn’t change with Borna Barisic always preferred.

But the Croatian has struggled with injuries and form himself this season and with just six months remaining on his contract, there is no reason why the club need to push Yilmaz out of the door.

His recent performances have shown that he is capable of playing to a very good level and that he works in Clement’s system too, so this seems like the best chance to give him a real run in the team and see what he can do.

Letting him go in this window will see us short in the position and need to reinvest, when the answer may well already be at the club.
