Chris Sutton issues Rangers SPFL title admission ahead of Celtic v St Mirren clash

Chris Sutton has spoken about Rangers potentially winning the title ahead of the Celtic v St Mirren clash on Tuesday, 2 January.

Despite Celtic’s win in the Old Firm derby, he does not see the title race as a foregone conclusion and Gers still have games in hand.

After their win against Kilmarnock, they are five points adrift with a game in hand ahead of the game against St Mirren.

Sutton told Sky Sports: “I think this will be a big test for Celtic.

“It’s ok beating Rangers but this game before the break, Celtic need to go on and win this and have a well-earned lest and go again. It’s not a foregone conclusion that they’re going to go on to win the league.

“Rangers have games in hand and if they win those games in hand it’s going to be very very tight. They [Celtic] have been inconsistent this season and that’s a worry.”

Eyes on the prize

Losing the Old Firm derby at the end of 2023 dealt a significant blow to Rangers, placing them at a considerable disadvantage in the title race.

The defeat not only allowed Celtic to maintain momentum but also widened the points gap between the two teams.

In the fiercely competitive SPFL, every point is crucial and a draw in the derby would have at least kept Rangers within striking distance.

Rangers

The loss not only handed Brendan Rodgers’ side a psychological advantage but also increased the pressure on Gers to secure points in subsequent fixtures.

Now trailing by five points with a game in hand, Philippe Clement’s side must navigate a challenging path to close the gap.

They must focus on maximising their performances in upcoming matches post the winter break and capitalise on any potential slips from Celtic.

In other Rangers news, a sensation at a big-name Premier League club is the perfect long-term defensive option for Gers and a January transfer must be on the cards.
