Heart & Hand hit out at what Willie Collum said after Rangers v Celtic

The Heart & Hand Podcast has hit out at VAR official Willie Collum after he claimed referee Nick Walsh had not made a clear and obvious error by not awarding Rangers a penalty in the 2-1 defeat against Celtic.

This has come after it was initially claimed that the reason the penalty hadn’t been given was because Abdallah Sima was offside, although in an article in The Rangers Review it was reported that that was not the reason after all.

The official Rangers partner has now claimed that Collum lied about the reason for disallowing the goal, and insisted he should not continue as an official in the SPFL.

Taking to Twitter in reaction to the news [30 December], they wrote: “So where did all this offside nonsense come from then?

“He’s lied pure and simple when he’s realised everyone with working eyes knew it was a penalty. He can’t continue as an official.”

Lying to cover their backs

The conflicting reports emerging from Parkhead throughout the day just serve as further evidence of the incompetence of the referees and officials at the top of the game and that they are simply not fit for purpose.

Whether or not they got the decision right has now become irrelevant. They made the decision they did at the time, no penalty was awarded and the game moved on. First, around half an hour after the incident, they explained that it was offside, only to later claim that no error was made, which means one of the excuses was made up.

The article from The Rangers Review also claims that Sky Sports are unhappy with the officials for the way they delivered their explanation, so the SFA and officials in Scotland will have plenty to answer to in the wake of this controversy.

Getting decisions wrong is fine. It should be avoided, but it happens every week to one team or another and teams will get the rub of the green just as much as it goes against them. To outright lie about the decision is a whole other matter.
