Chris Sutton slams Cyriel Dessers after Ibrox flop ‘killed Rangers’ in Celtic defeat
Chris Sutton has slammed Cyriel Dessers live on air following Rangers Old Firm derby defeat to Celtic, suggesting the forward “killed” the Light Blues.
Brendan Rodgers’ side secured the Glasgow bragging rights once again with a 2-1 over Philippe Clement’s Gers at Celtic Park on Saturday (30 December) thanks to excellent strikes from both Paulo Bernardo and Kyogo Furuhashi.
Rangers pulled a late goal back via an excellent James Tavernier free-kick but wasted several chances to level the tie, the worst of which came from Dessers, with Sutton suggesting after the game it was his fault the Gers came away empty-handed.

Speaking on Sky Sports Football (30 December, 14:58) he said: “Dessers killed Rangers, I mean he had opportunities, wasn’t decisive enough and it’s not like his link-up play is up to much as well.
“Rangers need to address that situation, they may well have done with Fabio Silva who wasn’t a phenomenal goal scorer for Wolves in any way shape or form, but he’s still a young player. A lot of money spent on his in recent times and an opportunity for him to be the main man for Rangers.”
Has to be better
So far Dessers’ Rangers career has been nothing short of incredibly disappointing and just as it had appeared the Nigerian had turned a corner, he produced another poor performance in arguably the Light Blues’ biggest game of the season.
In the first half, the striker had an excellent chance to level things up as he found himself clean through on goal to only then take too long on the ball and fail to get his shot away. It was incredibly disappointing from the forward and supporters and Clement would have expected better.

Dessers is not good enough to be Rangers’ primary number nine and while he has shown minor signs of improvement in recent weeks, Saturday was just further proof that the Light Blues have to recruit a new centre-forward in January.
Hopefully, Silva will hit the ground running as Sutton mentioned live on air, but it will be risky if the Gers rely on an unproven youngster to win them to the Premiership title. More signings have to come through the door at Ibrox.
In other Rangers news, Neil Lennon admitted he would have been “apoplectic” with one decision during the Old Firm clash
