Chris Sutton reacts as Brendan Rodgers shares ‘enormous’ Celtic blow v Rangers

Chris Sutton has reacted after Brendan Rodgers confirmed Cameron Carter-Vickers would be unavailable for Celtic in their clash with Rangers, labelling it an “enormous blow”.

The Light Blues travel to Celtic Park on Saturday 30 December looking for their first Old Firm derby win under Philippe Clement and are hoping to close the gap at the top of the Scottish Premiership to only two points.

One man who definitely won’t be featuring is Carter-Vickers with Rodgers confirming the defender will be out until after the winter break.

Writing on his personal Twitter account on Friday (29 December) he said: “Enormous blow for Celtic losing the best defender in the league by a stretch…”

Enormous blow

Whether Rangers fans will agree with Sutton’s verdict that Carter-Vickers is the best defender in the Scottish Premiership by some way, it will be a huge blow to the Hoops to be without the centre-back for Saturday’s Old Firm clash.

Carter-Vickers has been superb for Celtic, particularly this season and Rangers will be happy that he cannot feature at Celtic Park, but that doesn’t mean that Clement’s side can become complacent and just assume that they will pick up all three points.

Rangers

The 25-year-old wasn’t fit to play in the first Glasgow derby of the season and yet Rangers were still unable to break down Celtic’s backline. While a lot has changed at Ibrox since then, the Gers will still have to improve from their last Old Firm outing to claim all three points.

While Clement’s side are unable to climb above the champions with three points on Saturday, a win would close the gap to only two points and the Gers will still have two games in hand.

This is the biggest game of the Light Blues’ campaign so far and they have to take advantage of Carter-Vickers’ absence.
