Groningen director Wouter Gudde responds to reports linking Kevin van Veen with Rangers move in January

Groningen director Wouter Gudde has dismissed the reports linking Kevin van Veen with a move to Rangers in the January transfer window.

Stefan Bleeker, a journalist for Dutch broadcaster RTV Noord, tweeted on Wednesday (27 December) that the Eerste Divisie side’s general manager has said there is “nothing true” in the links after the Scottish Daily Mail reported that the Gers were looking to sign the Dutch forward on Wednesday.

He added that he hasn’t heard anything about the rumours, with the Scottish newspaper claiming the Dutch club are exploring a deal to sell the 32-year-old with their promotion bid faltering.

Unlikely

It seems unlikely that Rangers will try and sign Van Veen in January because he doesn’t really fit the profile of the kind of player they are likely to want to bring in.

The Gers chairman John Bennett has made it clear that he wants the club to focus their attention on bringing in younger players that they could sell for a profit in the future.

With the Dutchman turning 33 next summer, there is pretty much no chance that they would be able to make money on him down the line.

The forward’s goal record in Scotland does make him an attractive proposition for the time being, though, after he scored 25 SPFL goals for Motherwell last season before joining Groningen.

But he hasn’t quite been able to keep up his form this season back in his homeland, having notched just five goals in 14 appearances, potentially putting some clubs off from making a move to sign him in January.
