Stephan Van Der Heyden reacts as Rangers showdown v Ross County postponed

Rangers assistant manager Stephan Van Der Heyden has directly reacted to the news that Rangers’ clash with Ross County has been postponed due to weather conditions.

Philippe Clement’s side were due to face Ross County at Ibrox on Wednesday (27 December) only for the game to be called off only hours before kick-off after adverse weather conditions meant that the visitors were unable to make the trip to Glasgow.

That means that the Light Blues have been unable to close the gap between them and Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership table and Van Der Heyden has admitted that he cannot even remember the last time he had a game called off.

Writing on his personal Twitter account (27 December) he said: “Can not even remember when I last had a game postponed…”

Welcome to Scotland

The Scottish Premiership is unlike any other league in the world for a whole host of reasons and Clement, Van Der Heyden and the rest of his Rangers backroom staff have got the perfect welcome to what winter brings to football north of the border.

It is rather frustrating that the game has been called off despite Rangers’ suggestion that the Ibrox pitch was perfectly safe and prepared to be played on. That will have been the biggest barrier to beating Wednesday’s storm and it had already been conquered.

But for some reason, Ross County had decided to travel to Glasgow on the day of the game when a storm had been predicted for some time. You would have imagined that the away side would have been better prepared to ensure that they were at the ground safely to fulfil the fixture.

From a Rangers perspective it is disappointing as Clement and his side were relishing the opportunity of closing the gap to Celtic during the Old Firm clash on Sunday 30 December and that is now no longer possible.

However, the advantage of Wednesday’s postponement is that the Light Blues now get a whole week off to prepare for arguably the biggest game of their season so far. Hopefully, they’ll make use of that and claim all three points at Celtic Park next time out.
