James Bisgrove confirms what Rangers have done after postponement v Ross County

James Bisgrove has confirmed Rangers have donated the food which would have gone to waste following the decision to postpone the SPFL clash with Ross County to the Simon Community Food Bank in Glasgow.

Alongside their catering partner Levy, Rangers made the decision to donate the food rather than waste it, in a charitable gesture that proves once again the strength of the community-orientated thinking at Ibrox.

The game was postponed due to weather conditions caused by Storm Gerrit, with Police Scotland confirming the decision was made as it would have been unsafe for fans travelling from the Highlands to Glasgow.

“While of course, everyone at Rangers was hoping for tonight’s match to go ahead,” Bisgrove told The Rangers Review [27 December], “We were very keen to support Glasgow’s homeless community with a donation of some of the unused food from our sold-out hospitality suites and kiosks.

“We are extremely proud of our community roots at Rangers, and we felt this was the least we could do, particularly at this time of year. I’d like to thank our partners, Levy, for their excellent support in making this possible.”

A gesture of goodwill

On the rare occasion like this one that a football match is postponed due to any reason, minds immediately can turn to question what will be done with the food provided for the match-going fans and hospitality suites at Ibrox, and it is often assumed it will simply be binned.

The decision made by Rangers to donate the food to a local food bank is a lovely touch, particularly at this time of year, and should set a precedent across Scotland where games are often postponed or abandoned at this time of year due to the difficult conditions.

With this call, Rangers continue their long-standing tradition of being a club whose roots are firmly planted in the local area, and with a focus on community particularly important at this time of year, the decision has been warmly received by fans.

The Simon Community is a homeless charity who are dedicated to helping those on the streets of Glasgow, with services also provided in Edinburgh, Perth and North Lanarkshire.
