Rangers ‘problems’ mooted ahead of January transfer window, troublesome position may be fixed

Rangers boss Philippe Clement will be hoping to sign a new left-back in the January transfer window, according to Mark Pirie.

The journalist outlined the Gers’ likely transfer plans for next month in an article for the Daily Record [25 December].

Rangers spent big in the summer, but they have been linked with a number of players ahead of the window reopening next week.

“Where to start for Philippe Clement?” Pirie said. “While he has problems up front with injury woes facing Danilo and Kemar Roofe, with the cash splurged in the summer on the frontline by his predecessor Michael Beale the Belgian may look elsewhere.

“Borna Barisic is out of contract in the summer and with Ridvan Yilmaz failing to displace the Croat since his arrival Clement will hope a left-back is in the back of Santa’s sleigh.”

Wait until summer

A new left-back will undoubtedly be on the agenda for Rangers given Barisic’s contract situation and, well, the lack of quality Yilmaz has showed when called upon.

However, it may well be that the Gers wait until the summer before bringing in a new player in that position, at which point it will be known for definite whether or not Barisic is staying on.

Of more immediate priority in January will be a holding midfielder, with a number of players in that area currently sidelined, or perhaps even a new attacker.

Clement Rangers

The Light Blues are well and truly in the title race, so it is important Clement – who has worked wonders since replacing Michael Beale – is properly backed in January.

Clement no doubt already has a few targets in mind, and hopefully one of those will be brought to Ibrox over the coming weeks.

After all, the right signing in January could easily prove to be the final piece to the jigsaw as we look to successfully chase down Celtic.
