Rangers: Steven Thompson waxes lyrical about ‘inventive’ Ross McCausland after what he did v Aberdeen
Steven Thompson raved about Ross McCausland after his impact driving at the Aberdeen defence during Rangers’ 1-0 Viaplay Cup final win at Hampden Park on Sunday (17 December).
The former Rangers striker gushed over the winger’s impact after a defence-splitting run that saw him provide one of the only direct threats to Kelle Roos all game.
Thompson finished by praising the recovering tackle from Aberdeen defender Nicky Devlin, who prevented an almost-certain goal as McCausland burst through.

Speaking live on BBC Sportsound [17 December, 16:20], Thompson raved: “It’s so inventive from young McCausland. One of the only times in the game that someone has driven at the opposition defence.
“In the end, it’s a sensational recovering tackle from Devlin.”
The youngster continues to shine
McCausland has been called upon more than anyone would have expected this season at Rangers, with Philippe Clement putting plenty of faith in his ability, and at just 20 years old, the youngster is continuing to shine in a Rangers shirt.
His direct running on the ball is a constant threat to the opposition’s defence, backing the defenders up or forcing them to commit to a challenge while he remains in control, he brings a different attacking element to the side.

He was unlucky not to open the scoring in the move which earned such high praise from Thompson, and if not for Devlin’s last-ditch challenge, he almost certainly would have put his team 1-0 up early in the second half.
It was captain James Tavernier who eventually won the game for the Ibrox team, and if McCausland can go on to replicate what he has done during his time in Glasgow, it will surely be more than he ever could have expected when the season began.
In other Rangers news, a 3/10 let the side down again in player ratings v Aberdeen.
