Giovanni van Bronckhorst reacts as Rangers beat Aberdeen in Viaplay Cup final

Former manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst has congratulated Rangers on their Viaplay Cup final triumph over Aberdeen.

The Gers saw off Aberdeen 1-0 at Hampden Park on Sunday (17 December) through captain James Tavernier’s second-half strike.

It marks the first time Rangers have lifted silverware since the 2021-22 Scottish Cup when Van Bronckhorst was in charge.

The Dutchman, sacked by the Gers 13 months ago, took to Instagram shortly after the game to post [18 December]: “Congratulations”.

Classy

Van Bronckhorst provided Gers fans with plenty of happy memories, not least with their run to the 2021-22 Europa League final.

Going to Michael Beale after Gio was a downgrade, which has only become clearer with hindsight, but Rangers now appear to have corrected course.

Philippe Clement seems like a step up in terms of the calibre of manager the Gers have been used to in recent times, with the Belgian simply possessing the Midas touch.

The cup triumph at the weekend lifts some weight off the shoulders of everyone connected to the Gers and instils a winning mentality in the group.

Rangers

As Van Bronckhorst’s tenure goes to show, a manager can go from hero to zero in no time at all, but that will surely not be the case with Clement.

Clement and his players should enjoy the victory while they can, before focus then switches back to overhauling Celtic at the Scottish Premiership summit.

In other Rangers news, a BBC pundit slammed something “out of order” he saw during the first half against Aberdeen.
