Rangers: Willie Miller salutes ‘incredible human being’ James Tavernier after Viaplay Cup final victory

Willie Miller has described James Tavernier as an “incredible human being” in the wake of his Viaplay Cup final-winning goal for Rangers against Aberdeen at Hampden Park on Sunday (17 December).

The former Aberdeen defender gushed over Rangers’ captain for his advanced position, getting forward from right-back to slam the ball home and win the game for his team.

Miller was also quick to salute Borna Barisic for his delivery that led to the goal, with both Rangers full-backs combining to score what proved to be the winner.

Speaking live on BBC Sportsound [17 December, 16:43], Miller gushed: “He’s an incredible human being, isn’t he? He’s a full-back, not a wing-back, and he’s up there to latch on.

“It’s a magnificent cross from Barisic as well, the full-backs combining. He scissor kicks it into the ground, Kele Roos has no chance as it rattles in.”

The difference-maker yet again

How often does Tavernier step up to win the game for Rangers? He is so often the difference between a draw and a win for his side, and on this occasion, he was never going to let anything other than Rangers winning the trophy happen at Hampden Park.

Scoring the winning goal and putting in an excellent defensive shift to help his side to win the trophy in 90 minutes with a clean sheet in hand was all he would have been dreaming about and he made that a reality.

Such high praise even from a former player of the defeated opposition speaks volumes of what Tavernier has done for Rangers, not only today but throughout his career on the blue side of Glasgow, and he has once again written his name into Rangers legend.

Tavernier has now won all there is to win domestically in Scotland – the SPFL, the League Cup and the Scottish Cup, with a winning goal in the final to complete his collection. What a special player he really is.

In other Rangers news, a 3/10 flop was awful while an 8/10 star shone in the final.
