Hugh Keevins blasts back at Scott Brown as Rangers conspiracy theory kicked into overdrive by ex-Celtic captain

Hugh Keevins has hit out at ex-Celtic captain Scott Brown for pandering to conspiracy theories about referees being biased in favour of Rangers.

The Light Blues have won their fair share of penalties in recent seasons while, admittedly, not many have been given against Scotland’s most successful club either.

However, fans of certain clubs have come to the belief that there’s a bias towards the Gers when it comes to penalty decisions.

Brown didn’t help matters by fueling the tin-foil-hat-wearers with his prediction that Aberdeen will not get a spot-kick against Rangers at Hampden Park on Sunday in the Viaplay Cup final [Scottish Sun].

Journalist Keevins has blasted back at this, dismantling Brown’s prediction.

“Every now and then we feel the need to loosen the lid on the pressure cooker within Scottish football. My old sparring partner, Scott Brown, bless him, performed that function by publicly stating there was no way Barry Robson’s side would get a penalty in the cup final,” said Keevins on the Daily Record website (17 December).

“All that stuff stimulates conversation and re-inforces supporters’ belief in dishonest referees who are under orders from the game’s ruling bodies to indulge in match-fixing. That’s not sensationalism. It is the only interpretation possible of the theory that there is institutionalised bias within our game.

“It is a grievance eagerly nursed by the fans who need to cling to the idea of a global conspiracy in order to help them through times of stress and strain. Rangers fans must have a Kevin Clancy because his name is Kevin Clancy and that’s enough for them to be suspicious of his every move.”

Idiocy

Keevins is right.

Football fans need to come up with some kind of conspiracy theory in order to show that they their own misfortunes aren’t of their own doing.

Rangers win a lot of penalties and don’t concede many.

That’s usually true of the best teams in most leagues because they spend more time in other teams’ penalty areas and opposition players don’t spend too much time in their penalty area.

Is that so hard to understand?

Rangers fans have had their own conspiracies over the years but when every single club has them, maybe it’s time for these adults – yes, they’re usually grown men – to grow up and realise that not everyone is out to get you and sometimes, your football team can be pretty bad.

Aberdeen are near the relegation zone, aren’t they? Would you expect Luton to go and get a penalty away at Liverpool down in England? Would you expect Augsburg to rock up at Bayern Munich and win a penalty? No, you wouldn’t.

Some of these people are as thick as mince.

In other Rangers news, Scott Brown has shared his theory about the Gers after an “ignoration” admission by Tim Sherwood.
