Graham Dorrans names Celtic ace Matt O’Riley as the player Sam Lammers needs to emulate at Rangers

Sam Lammers needs to look to emulate the performances of Celtic ace Matt O’Riley to succeed at Rangers, according to Graham Dorrans.

Dutch forward Lammers has largely flattered to deceive since moving to Ibrox as one of nine summer signings made by former boss Michael Beale.

For Dorrans, who played for Rangers between 2017 and 2019, Lammers needs to be putting up the sort of numbers O’Riley does at Celtic.

Dorrans said on The Go Radio Football Show, in quotes reported by the Boot Room (15 December): “In terms of [Sam] Lammers again he’s come in, he’s an honest player and he’s done okay.

“But if you look at Celtic, you need Lammers to be you’re sort of Matt O’Riley type.

“That’s what you need. The numbers that Matt O’Riley gets and the assists, that’s what the Rangers fans would be looking for from Lammers.”

A fair comparison

It is fair to say that Lammers should not really be judged entirely on his goal output at Ibrox because he is not by any means an out-and-out striker and his role is to be a supporting forward.

But having said that O’Riley is not a traditional striker either and yet he has nine goals and five assists for Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic side in the Scottish Premiership this season, compared to two goals and just a solitary assist for Lammers.

Being truthful, Lammers just has not cut the mustard in a Rangers shirt so far and unless here is a marked improvement in the coming weeks it could be that boss Philippe Clement sees him as dispensable as he looks to bring in his own players.

Of course, there is time for him to turn his Ibrox career around and make a valuable contribution under Clement, but right now that looks a long way from happening.
