BBC Scotland pundit celebrates ‘financial gain’ for Rangers after ‘historic’ development

At the sound of the final whistle, as Rangers beat Real Betis 3-2 in Seville, Kenny Miller couldn’t help but celebrate the financial gain the Ibrox club will receive from their European progress.

The former Gers man suggested the money gained could go towards investments into the squad to support Philippe Clement in the January transfer window.

Miller said the win would be historic for Rangers, securing a late victory against a top side to progress from the Europa League group stage with every player on the pitch stepping up.

Speaking live following the game on TNT Sports [14 December], Miller gushed: “There’s real financial gain for the club, there’s already talk about investments and what’s going to happen with the squad in January.

“This is maybe a little boost to the coffers that can help them along that way.

“But take nothing away from the performance tonight, there was so much made of the injuries and the players that were missing, but every single player who set foot on that pitch has played their part in what has been a historic victory against a very good team.”

A historic win for Rangers

While that victory may not rank up there with Rangers’ most important, highest-scoring, or most notable in their esteemed history, the context of the result will mean it lives long in the memory of the fans – especially those that travelled to Seville.

Just a couple of years on from the heartbreak of the final in the same city, these players gave fans a new memory to take home from Spain, having been struck by an injury crisis, pegged back twice after going ahead, and still managing to grab all three points.

Rangers

Progressing as winners from their group means, in theory, the draw will be more favourable to Rangers, and they avoid the extra game in February where second-placed teams will face those who have dropped out of their Champions League groups.

This will be a huge boost to Rangers’ confidence over the rest of the season, knowing they can take on and beat top teams in Europe, and the finances that come along with that can help Clement to build his squad in his image.
