Ally McCoist demands Philippe Clement extend Jack Butland Rangers contract ASAP

Ally McCoist has urged Philippe Clement to extend Jack Butland’s contract at Rangers as a priority after his “outstanding” start to life at Ibrox.

The English stopper signed a four-year deal when he arrived in the summer and was key once again as Gers claimed a 3-2 win over Real Betis to top their Europa League group.

And speaking after the game live on TNT Sports (14 December, 22:17), host Emma Dodds claimed his deal expired in 2025 which led to Rangers legend McCoist saying that getting Butland tied down to a new, longer contract should be one of Philippe Clement’s priorities in the coming weeks with the January transfer window approaching.

“I think another thing that’s worth mentioning, when you asked the question will he be supported in the transfer window. Should he, yeah, absolutely, definitely,” he said.

“But if I’m Philippe Clement, the first thing I’m doing, I’m getting the goalkeeper a longer contract. That’s the first thing I’m doing.

“Extend that. Not that I’m in any position to give any manager any ideas or plans, but I’ll tell you right now the goalkeeper has been absolutely outstanding and clearly he will want to bring one or two new faces into the club and he deserves to do that, but you want to keep that goalkeeper.”

Priority

There’s no doubting that out of all the things Michael Beale did during his time at the club, bringing Jack Butland in was the best.

The goalkeeper has easily been the best signing of the summer and has filled the gloves of the legendary Allan McGregor with ease.

The two-year deal claim at the time always seemed a little bit short but it’s clear that Butland has an intention of getting into the England setup again, and that means he will probably want to move back to the Premier League at some point.

But ultimately, we have to do what is best for us and that is getting him to extend his contract to ensure that we don’t have to go through the hassle of replacing a top class goalkeeper again.

Clement will know how important he is already, and McCoist’s sentiments will be echoed by the entire fan base so hopefully the board can deliver and keep him for as long as possible.
