Rangers: Philippe Clement to decide on Ianis Hagi return to Ibrox in January as David Edgar shares loan recall update
Heart & Hand founder David Edgar has revealed that Ianis Hagi could be recalled from his loan spell as Rangers continue to struggle in midfield.
The 25-year-old joined Deportivo Alaves on a season-long loan, cast aside by Michael Beale during the summer transfer window which saw a train of incoming players.
However, there is a possibility that Hagi could come back to Ibrox early, with the Romanian midfielder making just six starts since making the switch to Spain, appearing as a substitute on eight occasions.
In response to being asked whether Rangers could recall Hagi in January, Edgar responded via X (13 December), “We can, would be up to the boss [Philippe Clement].”
Clement has a very important decision to make ahead of the January transfer window.
Short-term fix
Although Hagi can also be deployed as a winger, Hagi is primarily an attacking midfielder and could help reduce Clement’s current injury crisis in the middle of the park.
Hagi is not a stranger to Ibrox and the Scottish Premiership, being just one match short of a century of Rangers appearances, with 16 goals and 21 assists in that time.

The midfielder’s 2022/23 season was plagued by a knee injury which kept him out for the majority. So it is understandable as to why he was shipped out on loan to gather some all-important minutes on the pitch away from Ibrox.
Having proven he is not suffering from injury anymore, Clement has the option to take a gamble and recall him from the loan spell at Alaves. It would be a short-term fix while Rangers’ midfield options fight for full fitness but with a busy campaign ahead, it could be the right call.
