Scott Brown cannot believe ‘Incredible’ Rangers stat he was told

Former Celtic midfielder Scott Brown was left shocked when he found out when Rangers last conceded a penalty in the league.

Brown was playing for Aberdeen the last time the Gers conceded a league spot-kick, which was in a 1-1 draw in January 2022 [Daily Record, 12 December].

Rangers meet the Dons in the Scottish League Cup final at Hampden Park on Sunday (17 December), having been awarded a penalty in their 3-1 win against Dundee on Saturday (9 December).

“Is that the last time they conceded a penalty?” said Brown, as quoted by the Daily Record. “I’ve been retired that long… since they last had a penalty against them (in the league)! That’s incredible, eh? It’s good to see VAR is working well!”

And when asked what the chances of Aberdeen getting a penalty in the upcoming clash at Hampden are, Brown replied: “None. I don’t think Aberdeen will get a penalty on those stats! Wow.”

Bias?

Brown clearly feels there is some form of bias towards Rangers in this regard, with the former Celtic man not happy at the lack of spot-kicks going against the Ibrox club.

Gers manager Philippe Clement will, however, simply not care as he prepares his men for one of the biggest periods of their season, and indeed his biggest period in the job so far.

The Ibrox club will go head to head with old foes Aberdeen on Sunday, in what is Clement’s first chance at clinching silverware at the club.

But first he must guide his players to victory in Europe, with Rangers travelling to Spain to take on Real Betis in the Europa League.

That Europa League group stage match will take place on Thursday (14 December), with the hosts sitting top of the standings, one point and one place ahead of the visitors, with Sparta Prague only a point behind the latter in third.
