Ridvan Yilmaz, Jon McLaughlin and Kieran Dowell ‘Surplus to requirements’, expected to leave Rangers in coming weeks

Rangers have deemed a first-team trio as “surplus to requirements” and they are expected to leave in the coming weeks according to Football Scotland.

Writing on their website (12 December), the news outlet report that Ridvan Yilmaz, Jon McLaughlin and Kieran Dowell are expected to be offloaded during the January transfer window.

McLaughlin and Dowell have struggled for minutes this season since Philippe Clement arrived at Ibrox, while Yilmaz has found himself behind Borna Barisic at left-back once again.

“Gers are expected to offload several fringe players over the coming weeks, with Jon McLaughlin, Ridvan Yilmaz and Kieran Dowell among those deemed surplus to requirements,” they wrote.

Expected

The squad is very bloated and while it has arguably been a good thing recently because of our injury crisis, it certainly isn’t something that is sustainable.

Dowell was a weird signing by Michael Beale initially because we already had so many options in his position, and then we added three strikers and another winger while the likes of Rabbi Matondo never left.

McLaughlin started last season as the number one at the club but quickly showed he wasn’t capable and was replaced by Allan McGregor once again, and now Jack Butland is in the spot with Robby McCrorie his number two.

Ridvan Yilmaz is a strange one though simply because whenever he plays he tends to do fairly well, or certainly no worse than Barisic, but he’s struggled with injuries and has never really got an extended run of games.

It will be no shock whatsoever if any of these players are to leave the club in January, and it could actually be shrewd if we can get a decent fee for them.
