BBC Sportsound presenter glad as controversial moment dodged in Rangers win vs Dundee

BBC presenter Kenny Macintyre made light of a possible penalty incident during Saturday’s (9 December) Scottish Premiership clash between Rangers and Dundee.

Abdallah Sima got on the end of a James Tavernier corner with a powerful header in the 34th minute to put the Gers 3-1 ahead at Ibrox in a game they had trailed.

Having earlier lambasted the decision to award the home side a penalty, which Tavernier converted to make it 2-1, pundit Leanne Crichton joked there may have been a similarly controversial call had Sima not scored.

“Just as well he scored because there’s a slight shirt pull there,” Crichton said on BBC Radio Scotland’s Sportsound [9 December, 15:39].”

Host Macintyre swiftly interjected with: “Oh my goodness.”

Great goal

To say referee Kevin Clancy had his work cut out in the first half of the contest with Dundee is an understatement.

The man in middle awarded a penalty, sent off Jose Cifuentes and also ruled out a goal, on top of the four that were scored.

The BBC Sportsound pundits were unanimous in saying that Rangers’ penalty should never have been awarded.

Rangers

Had Sima not scored from Tavernier’s corner, they may well have been further infuriated had VAR intervened and given Tavernier a chance to add to his tally.

As for the goal itself, Tom English described it as “unbelievable”, with Sima now very much Philippe Clement’s star man in an attacking sense.

The versatile attacker, who was again used on the left against Dundee, is proving to be the best of the Gers’ outfield summer arrivals, and long may this form continue.

In other Rangers news, Clement has shared whether Nico Raskin is in line to return to action prior to the Viaplay Cup final.
