Rangers urged to ‘avoid’ Alfredo Morelos transfer temptation as they must ‘trim the fat’

Journalist Kenneth Ward has urged Rangers to avoid another transfer mistake after Alfredo Morelos was released by Santos following their shock relegation in Brazil.

The Herald journalist reacted to murmurs that Morelos may be on Rangers’ radar on a free transfer having left the club just months ago, urging the club not to make the move.

It was also suggested that Philippe Clement will need to cut his squad down before adding real pedigree in January rather than jumping on a snap-purchase.

Rangers

Ward was writing a preview of the January transfer window for The Herald [7 December] as he urged the Ibrox club not to give in to the temptation surrounding their former striker.

He shared: “With the news that former fans’ favourite Alfredo Morelos has become a free agent again after a miserable spell with Santos in Brazil, who were relegated from the top tier for the first time in their storied history this week, murmurs arose that the Colombian should be snapped up again by the Ibrox club.

“This is the kind of snap-purchase the Belgian, like his counterpart in Parkhead, would do well to avoid. Trimming the fat off their current contingents and looking to add real pedigree will be key.”

Rangers cannot make the same mistakes

While it may be tempting to bring back the former Ibrox hitman, Morelos was let go at the end of last season for a reason, and fans must remember that. His heavy wages and lack of form are reason enough to avoid him and you have to ask, if he wasn’t an ex-player, would you want him?

The disappointing form of the likes of Cyriel Dessers and Sam Lammers, since they arrived in the summer, may have people longing for the days of old when Morelos was firing them in every week, but those days are gone.

Rangers

It must be said, there has been no suggestion that Rangers would consider a deal to bring Morelos back, but suggestions are floating in the fanbase and it is the exact type of deal the club need to move on from if they want to make progress.

The January window will give Clement a chance to improve his squad both through signings and sales, and he will already have an idea of the type of player he wants – Morelos is highly unlikely to be one of those.

In other Rangers news, another journalist has told the club they must make an obvious signing.
