Jonny McFarlane shares what Philippe Clement personally told him about Rangers transfer plans in January

Jonny McFarlane has shared that Philippe Clement personally told him he has plans to add to the Rangers squad in the January transfer window.

The Rangers Review journalist, speaking on their YouTube channel (8 December) shared that the Belgian coach told him he will go out and sign players when the window opens and expressed the need to go out and sign a striker “who scores goals”.

The Gers spent £15m in the summer under Michael Beale and several of those signings have struggled to make a name for themselves so far, especially Sam Lammers, Dujon Sterling, Cyriel Dessers and Jose Cifuentes.

And speaking to fellow journalist Derek Clark on The Rangers Review YouTube channel (20m:30sec), McFarlane said: “Fundamentally Derek, whatever pot of money Philippe Clement gets in the Jan window, we know because he’s told me personally that he’s gonna go and sign players in the window.

“Whatever pot of money he gets, he needs to go and sign a player who scores goals.”

Reinforcements needed

Despite Clement’s promising start to life as Rangers boss, winning eight of his 11 games in charge at Ibrox, the Belgian hasn’t been particularly happy about the amount of injuries he’s had to contend with.

Against Hearts on Wednesday, Clement faced yet another blow when Tom Lawrence had to be withdrawn in the first half of their 1-0 win.

Rangers

Speaking on the club’s injury situation after the match, the former Monaco boss said (via Joshua Barrie, 6 December) he’d never seen anything like it before.

If the Gers are to compete on all fronts this season, they certainly need a fully fit squad, one which is consistently durable and with a clean bill of health. Right now, that certainly isn’t the case and Clement knows it, having to field a different squad every week.

There are no guarantees Clement will be handed the funds to sign the players he wants in January [Chris Jack, 14 October] which means he may look to force out several stars to fund his brand-new revolution in Glasgow.

And given what journalist McFarlane has shared, the Belgian is hell-bent on kicking off that rebuild in the January window. If Rangers are to mount a serious challenge on all fronts this season, it is absolutely necessary.
