Jo Potter urges Rangers Women stars to ‘move on’ from ‘difficult’ international break

Jo Potter has urged her Rangers Women’s side to quickly “move on” from their difficult November international break when they face Motherwell on Sunday 10 December.

Jenna Fife, Nicola Doherty, Rachel McLauchlan, Kirsty Maclean and Brogan Hay were all part of the Scotland squad that were thrashed 6-0 by England at Hampden Park, with results elsewhere also ending Great Britain’s hopes of having a team at the Olympics.

Despite the poor result and performance during the break, Potter has called for her side’s focus to return to club football as Rangers look to extend their gap at the top of the Scottish Women’s Premier League when they travel to Motherwell.

Speaking to RangersTV (7 December) she said: “The result against England is never going to be an easy one, it’s my job now to pick my players back up and help them get back on track with us. Seeing them today and knowing that they’re happy to be back in this environment around the people that want them here.

“They’ll be fine, it’s lessons that you have to learn. Sometimes it’s a difficult time to go through, but they definitely won’t dwell on it, they’re not those type of people.

“They’ll learn from those moments, I think you have to especially as an elite player, but you have to move on very quickly too.”

Back up and running

Before the November international break, spirits were incredibly high in the Rangers camp as Potters’ side headed into December off of the back of a 7-0 win over Montrose Ladies and an important and professional 2-0 win over Glasgow City.

The Light Blues are one point clear of Celtic at the top of the table after 14 matches and eight points above third place Glasgow City, so they will know that a win against Motherwell is their only way of guaranteeing their place at the top of the league.

Sunday’s hosts have lost nine of their opening 14 games conceding 35 goals in the process and were beaten by Partick Thistle in their last outing before the international break. Celtic put six past them earlier this season and Rangers will want to do the same.

Hopefully, Potters’ rallying cry would have done the trick and helped the Scottish internationals in her side move on from their international heartbreak. Rangers can achieve something special this season, but they’ll have to be focused to do so.
