Barry Ferguson shares if Rangers should re-sign Alfredo Morelos in January
Barry Ferguson does not want Rangers to re-sign Alfredo Morelos in January, despite admitting that he is “one of my favourites”.
Morelos left the club on a free transfer in the summer and ended up in Brazil with Santos, who have been relegated to the second division for the first time in their 111-year history.
Now the Colombian could be set to leave on a free transfer as they look to cut their wage bill, and some fans have called for Morelos to return to Ibrox. But Ferguson, writing in his Daily Record column (8 December) believes it would be the wrong decision for the club and Philippe Clement.
“Alfredo Morelos was one of my favourites. And anyone who has read this column over the years can vouch for that,” he wrote.
“So it’s no surprise to me that some Rangers fans are now calling for Morelos to be brought back to the club in January now that his big move to Brazil has ended up in disaster after just six months.
“Especially if he’s available for no fee and willing to take a knocked-down wage. But, as much as I might naturally like the idea, I also believe it would be the wrong move for my old club and new boss Philippe Clement who is trying to drive Rangers forward in a different direction.”

Every Rangers fan loves Morelos for what he did during his time at Ibrox, even though it ended badly and in a way nobody would have wished for.
But the club have now moved on from Morelos and by the time his contract expired, everyone was on the same page that it was the right thing for the two parties to go their separate ways.
While Rangers definitely need to be looking at striker options in January because of how badly Sam Lammers and Cyriel Dessers have done, Morelos would represent a backward step rather than actual progression.
Clement will have his own ideas about how he wants the squad to look and having already had to deal with a squad that isn’t his, this is a chance for him to put his own stamp on it rather than bring back old issues.
Fans can love Morelos from a distance, but bringing him back simply wouldn’t be the right thing to do.
