Philippe Clement confident in transfer plan ahead of January window

Philippe Clement has made a transfer promise as the January transfer window poses a new challenge for Rangers and new Chief of Recruitment Nils Koppen.

Following the summer transfer window under Michael Beale, the squad was left in disarray with a whole host of different styles and attitudes making up the dressing room.

However, Clement is confident that Rangers can correct Beale’s wrongdoings in the upcoming transfer windows and create a more successful and hungry squad to compete for titles.

Rangers

“I chose this one [project] because of the history of the club and to bring titles and trophies back,” he said to Daily Record on Wednesday (6 December). “That was my motivation to come to Rangers.

“We are going to look for players with that same motivation. It is not about the amount (of money), it is about the quality. In the end, it is not about how much you spend.

“We are fishing in not the best pool but we need to get the best fish out of that and as fast as possible. Nils [Koppen] is the right guy to guide that process.”

Which players to axe?

Gers fans will certainly hope that Clement is right. Beale left the club with several new players, with some still unable to make the desired impact they anticipated when signing for the club in the summer.

There is plenty of talk surrounding the current players and the upcoming transfer window. Several of the squad have already been linked with moves away, and although Clement and Rangers are without a huge budget this January, any outgoings with help to afford any potential signings.

While Danilo, Leon Balogun, and Abdallah Sima have all been instant hits at Ibrox, the same cannot be said for the likes of Sam Lammers, Kieran Dowell or Todd Cantwell, all of whom could boost the budget if they were to leave.

Koppen’s speciality of finding diamonds among the rough will be an exciting prospect, having unearthed the likes of PSV Eindhoven’s exciting winger Johan Bakayoko, midfielder Joey Veerman and forward Noa Lang.

There is plenty of excitement to be had in the coming weeks. And Clement’s quotes only exacerbate that. It will be interesting to see how the January transfer window pans out, and if they choose to hold out until summer.

In other Rangers news, Clement has provided an update on the fitness of Nico Raskin and Ryan Jack.
