Kieran Dowell has to seek Rangers exit in January, he has no Ibrox future
Kieran Dowell’s substandard time at Rangers may be ticking away as he continues to fail at making an impression at Ibrox Stadium.
Since joining the Gers from Norwich City on a free transfer in the summer, the 26-year-old has made eight appearances in all competitions, playing just 264 minutes of football.
It is clear that the writing is on the wall for Dowell, despite his current contract running until June 2026. Even as a free transfer, it has been a disappointing one for both parties.

Speaking on the Rangers Review Podcast (5 December), journalist Derek Clark said, “He (Philippe Clement) was also asked about Kieran Dowell, there was a bit of noise that he’ll be allowed to leave in January.
“Interestingly he said there’s a lot of competition in that area of the pitch but that he still has a Rangers future, everyone at the club still has a future as does he.
“I would be surprised to see him past January 31st or when that transfer window shuts. I don’t think he’s going to spend much longer at Rangers I’ve got to admit, I don’t see where he gets an opportunity.”
Just as Clement admitted, there is a vast amount of competition in the Gers midfield.

It will be tough for anyone to displace Jose Cifuentes and John Lundstram at the base of midfield, with the attacking midfield role being taken up by Sam Lammers, Tom Lawrence, or Todd Cantwell.
Some may say that Dowell would be a fool to attempt to stay at the club and fight for a spot in the starting XI. And those people could be right, with the former Norwich City man cut from the matchday squad by Clement on the majority of occasions since replacing Michael Beale.
Dowell will probably admit that he has failed to make the desired impact at Rangers. A move away in January could be the best bet for his future, despite Clement’s recent words about still having a future at the club.
However, the player may want to prove himself and continue to see out his current contract until 2026.
In other Rangers news, the club may now rekindle the transfer interest in a ‘Dynamic’ central midfielder amid a recent behind-the-scenes coup.
