Rangers boss Philippe Clement opens up on Todd Cantwell talks, January plans outlined

Philippe Clement says he has held “really good” talks with Todd Cantwell over his position in the side, while also opening up on his Rangers plans for the January break.

Cantwell was shifted into his preferred central attacking position for Sunday’s (3 December) 2-0 win at St Mirren, having mainly played out on the right.

The Englishman provided an assist for Abdallah Sima and will be hopeful of retaining his spot in the number 10 role against Hearts on Wednesday (6 December).

Asked about Cantwell’s position for that match in his pre-match news conference on Tuesday (5 December), as per Rangers’ official Twitter account, Clement said: “There may be moments he has to play on the right side due to injuries, or to do a job for the team.

“Todd is ready for this, we had really good talks.”

Clement also confirmed he plans to hold talks with individual players once Scottish football takes a temporary break in early January.

“Our training camp in January will also be a time for a lot of hard work, and a lot of individual talks and as a team,” he told reporters.

“It has been a busy period, but I know the players better and better now.

“Until January, and afterwards, everyone has the time to prove they are the right player for the club – it is a battle for every shirt.”

Cantwell can shine under Clement

Cantwell has struggled when used on the flank, not least in the 1-1 draw with Aris Limassol last week when hauled off in the first half.

That is the ultimate embarrassment for any footballer, with Clement confirming after the match the decision was tactical, rather than injury related.

It looked as though the former Norwich City ace was facing a period out of the side, but he impressed on his return in an attacking central role.

Clement’s comments suggest he may be tempted to use Cantwell out wide again, though, and he must therefore show he can adapt.

The 25-year-old showed last season just how talented a player he is when fully on it, and the hope is that he can regain that form under Clement.

Having already got the best out of other underperforming players, Clement will now look to work his magic on arguably the most talented player at his disposal.

In other Rangers news, Clement has confirmed an injury setback for a key member of his side.
