Graeme Souness still talking to Rangers to lend support in advisory role

Graeme Souness has shared the way he lends his support to Rangers chiefs when called upon, and suggested he could lend a hand to Philippe Clement too should he need it.

The Ibrox legend was asked whether he would return to Rangers in a behind-the-scenes role if they asked him when he revealed he had already been in discussions with the club in an advisory role.

Souness has claimed he would be happy to lend his support to the club and the boss if they feel it is needed, but wouldn’t give that advice unless he was asked.

Speaking live on talkSPORT [4 December, 11:10], Souness shared: “They’ve had their hand full with a new manager, getting him settled in. They’ve got a new director of football, they’ve had bigger fish to fry than me.

“But I am talking to them, and I’m at their service. I’m a Rangers supporter and I’m there to help in any way they feel I can help.

“Just being on the end of a phone, going up to watch games and, if the manager wanted me to offer an opinion – and I wouldn’t offer it without him asking me – I would be there for him as well.”

Good to have an experienced head to lend a hand

Souness could provide a different view of things to the current chiefs at Ibrox, and perhaps more than Clement, with his experience and knowledge of the club as both a manager and a player lending itself to a supporting role behind the scenes.

However, the suggestion that Clement should lean on him for help would be a bit far-fetched. The boss has a wealth of footballing experience at his disposal from his own time working in management, and while that may not quite extend to Scotland, there is enough for him to draw upon.

People may have been brainwashed by the struggles of the inexperienced Michael Beale, who probably could have done with the guidance and advice of his seniors, into thinking all new bosses need extra help.

Souness’ clarification that he would only lend this advice if called upon is important to note as he will not be trying to interfere in day-to-day operations at the club, which would likely set alarm bells off.
