BBC Sport journalist stunned by Rangers ‘enigma’ Todd Cantwell who ‘flattered to deceive’ v St Mirren

Rangers have an “enigma” on their hands in midfielder Todd Cantwell, according to BBC Sport journalist Sean McGill.

The 25-year-old clinched both assists as the Glasgow club defeated St Mirren 2-0 at Ibrox on Sunday (3 December).

The midfielder picked out on-loan attacker Abdallah Sima twice as the hosts clinched all three points in the league clash.

“The spotlight was on Cantwell after his early substitution on Thursday, and for much of the 90 minutes, he again flattered to deceive,” McGill wrote for BBC Sport (3 December).

“But his gorgeous assist for Sima’s second is a pass few players in the Premiership would be capable of pulling off, emphasising the enigma that Rangers have on their hands.”

Point to prove

Cantwell certainly had a point to prove to Rangers manager Philippe Clement against St Mirren after what happened against Aris Limassol.

With the Gers struggling in the first half of the Europa League clash on Thursday (30 November), the man in the dugout opted to withdraw Cantwell from the pitch just after the half-hour mark.

The former Norwich City man was replaced by young winger Ross McCausland, who justified his manager’s decision with an impressive equaliser not long after.

Clement decided to start the pair together for the league encounter with St Mirren, and it proved to be a good decision as the hosts ran out comfortable winners.

And Cantwell impressed in the final third with two assists for Sima, whose impressive finishing was on display for all to see.

Perhaps the substitution in Europe sparked a bit of life into Cantwell, who will now be keen to continue starting and continue creating goals for Clement.
